Salem, OR – The Salem Fire Department announced the addition of a new deputy fire chief, bringing decades of experience in fire service leadership, training, and operations.

Mike Walker joined the department with more than 30 years of experience in the fire service. He most recently served as Division Chief of Special Operations with the Boise Fire Department, where he oversaw Hazardous Materials, Dive and Swiftwater Rescue, Airport Rescue Firefighting, and Technical Rescue programs. In that role, he worked to strengthen operational readiness, expand training programs, and support long-term planning for regional response teams.

Throughout his career, Walker held several leadership positions, including Battalion Chief, Captain, Training Officer, and Recruit Academy Coordinator. He supervised multiple companies, mentored officers, and led initiatives aimed at improving coordination across agencies. He also contributed to the development of the first valley-wide Mayday emergency operations guideline used by multiple departments.

Officials said Walker has built a strong reputation in training and leadership development. He developed department-wide training programs, led regional academies, and worked to improve evaluation and probationary processes for new recruits.

In addition to his operational roles, Walker has been active in labor leadership, serving as Vice President of the Professional Firefighters of Idaho, where he advocated for firefighter safety at the state level.

Walker holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from Linfield College and is currently enrolled in the International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire Service Executive Development Institute.

Department officials said his experience and leadership are expected to strengthen the organization and enhance the service provided to the community.
