Former Bonner County man accused in stabbing

BOZEMAN, Mont. — A former Bonner County man was arrested Sunday after allegedly stabbing one of his two roommates multiple times, causing life-threatening wounds.

Bozeman television station KBZK reported that Cyrus Clearwater Mimbs, 18, appeared in Gallatin County Justice Court on Monday to face a charge of attempted deliberate homicide.

According to court documents, Bozeman Police responded to the 2200 block of Buckrake Avenue on Sunday for a 911 call reporting a stabbing.

Mimbs had reportedly fled the scene and was found by officers about a quarter-mile from the residence. The reporting officer said Mimbs refused to follow commands and resisted arrest, KBZK reported.

Court documents said Mimbs, one of his two roommates, and a third person who was interviewed as a witness were home, sitting on the living room couch for several hours. Mimbs, unprovoked, allegedly grabbed a large, fixed-blade knife from a coffee table and began stabbing his roommate in his chest, neck, and face, the station said.

The victim was able to run through the kitchen to the front door, according to court documents, but the door was locked. Mimbs reportedly started stabbing the victim again in the back and chest, forcing him to the floor.

Mimbs’ third roommate, who was upstairs, reportedly came down when he heard screaming and saw Mimbs stabbing the victim while holding him in a headlock. Court documents say he ran back upstairs and barricaded himself in his room with the other witness and called 911.

According to court documents, the victim was stabbed more than 20 times, sustained two punctured lungs and a broken neck. He was flown to a trauma center for medical care, the station reported.

The reporting officer said Mimbs agreed to be interviewed without an attorney present after he was read his rights. Mimbs allegedly said he intended to kill the victim, who he said was a source of “negative energy,” according to KBZK.

Mimbs also allegedly said he ran because he felt guilty for what he had done but felt “exhilarated” during the stabbing and, court documents say, thought it “would lead to a better future for himself.”

No further information about the victim’s current condition was available, KBZK reported.

Mimbs had his bail set at $500,000 in court Monday. His next appearance is set for Jan. 8 at 8 a.m.
