Salem, OR – The Salem Police Department arrested a suspect in connection with a robbery reported on March 21, 2026, in the 2800 block of Broadway Street NE.

Officers responded at approximately 3:00 p.m. to a report of theft involving more than $100 in merchandise. Investigators determined that a male suspect stole the items and attempted to leave the store, prompting an employee to intervene. A physical altercation followed during which the suspect entered a getaway vehicle.

Police said 35-year-old Gilberto Hernandez-Betancourt of Salem was identified as the driver of the vehicle, which struck the employee during the incident, causing minor injuries.

Officers later located the suspect vehicle and contacted Hernandez-Betancourt, who initially provided a false name. Authorities also discovered he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. During the investigation, officers found a large amount of stolen property inside the vehicle, which was linked to a separate theft at a Lowe’s store in Keizer.

Hernandez-Betancourt was taken into custody and lodged at the Marion County Jail on multiple charges, including Robbery in the Second Degree, Theft in the Second Degree, Giving False Information to a Police Officer, Felony Hit and Run, and Assault in the Second Degree.

Police said a second suspect involved in the incident has not been identified or located, and the investigation remains ongoing. Further inquiries are being directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
