Two men and a woman were killed in a horrific series of events on Monday, November 18, 2024, when a 51-year-old homeless man with a criminal past went on a lethal stabbing spree throughout Manhattan. The unprovoked attacks, which occurred over a span of less than three hours, have left the city grappling with questions about public safety and the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.
The violence began around 8:20 a.m. when the suspect approached a 36-year-old construction worker near West 19th Street and Eighth Avenue, fatally stabbing him in the abdomen. Approximately two hours later, the assailant attacked a 68-year-old man who was fishing by the East River near East 30th Street, inflicting fatal wounds. The final attack occurred near the United Nations headquarters at East 42nd Street and First Avenue, where a 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times; she later succumbed to her injuries at Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Ramon Rivera, who was apprehended shortly after the third attack. Rivera was found with blood on his clothing and in possession of two kitchen knives believed to have been used in the assaults. Witnesses, including a vigilant cab driver who followed Rivera and alerted the police, played a crucial role in his capture. Three murder charges have been brought against Rivera.
Investigations reveal that Rivera has a significant criminal history, including eight prior arrests for offenses such as burglary, assault, and grand larceny. He served time for charges of violence and burglary before being released from custody in October 2024. “There’s some real questions that we need to look at on why he was on the street, and he has some severe mental health issues that should have been examined,” said Mayor Eric Adams, who voiced his concerns about Rivera’s release.
