A Chinese man studying in Australia has captured everyone’s attention with his incredible dedication to love. For three months, 28-year-old Xu Guangli traveled back and forth every week between his hometown in Shandong province, China, and RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, where he’s finishing his master’s degree in arts management.
From August to October, Xu made this long journey every week to attend one class and spend time with his girlfriend, who had already gone back to China after finishing her studies in Australia. Each trip took him three days. He would leave his hometown, Dezhou, at 7 a.m., travel to Jinan to catch a flight, then fly to Melbourne the next day for class. Afterward, he’d head back home on the third day.
Xu explained, “It was my last semester, and I just needed one class to graduate. But more than that, my girlfriend had gone back to China, and life in Melbourne felt lonely without her.”
He had been studying in Australia for eight years and said the decision also helped him understand China’s job market better, which could help him in his career later on.
Xu shared his experience online, and it quickly caught the attention of social media. He gained nearly 10,000 followers. In one of his videos, he broke down the costs of each trip. A round trip cost him 6,700 yuan (around $900), including a return flight, taxi fares, and meals. To save money, he stayed on a friend’s couch during his one night in Melbourne each week.
Even though his weekly travel costs were more than the rent he used to pay in Melbourne, Xu said it was all worth it. “It was for love,” he said. “And of course, the good food back home.”
Interestingly, Xu booked connecting flights with different airlines, and in the process, he got the chance to visit a few Chinese cities and even traveled to Vietnam once.
Now that he’s finished his studies, Xu no longer has to make the long journey. His story has amazed many people, who praised his dedication and hard work.
Some online comments were full of admiration: “I’ve never seen anyone so dedicated to love,” one person said. Another added, “I can’t believe anyone would travel that much every week—it sounds exhausting.” And a third person said, “I wouldn’t even travel that far for anything, no matter how close the cities were.”
Xu’s journey is a perfect example of how far someone will go for love and the things that matter to them.
